the forgotten world of email
in the old days - it could be said easily, "anything you want to do on the web, you can do through email." times have changed - and so over the course of some upcoming articles i want to look and see if this is still true.
this article will begin with two interesting ideas: 1] searching the web via email and 2] viewing the web through email. it's still possible.
searching the web through email
follow these simple steps:
address an email to: www@web2mail.com
subject line: search mostbloggers
email body: leave blank (remember to remove your signature or disable it)
send: within about 5 mins you will receive the best match to your search.
try sending out whatever search subject you wish - and see what you might find. i have not tried this - but i think a multiple word query might be: mostbloggers + amos + dettonville
the use of the "+" symbol was the standard many moons ago for such searches.
if you want, try clicking here for a preformatted email or hit this for a multiple word query.
viewing the internet via email
send an email to: www@web2mail.com
subject line (mius http:// plus url): news.bbc.co.uk
email body: leave blank (remember to remove your signature or disable it)
send: within about 5 mins you will receive an html email of the webpage you have requested.
if you want try clicking this for a preformatted email.
this is just the beginning. i will be bringing out some more sources of info available through email and some other old school methods in the coming days. web2mail.com is quick and one of the easier sources to find - but more are out there - some old systems are still very much alive and filled with usefulness and info.
give the two examples above a test run - and keep your eye on this blog for more from the forgotten world of email (and www and the internet).
it should be fun.
webmasters (i hate that term - erh uh, people with their own websites) should take note - creative minds should also remember - just because spammers have ruined email in many ways (don't they find their way even into most everything somehow - like friendster and tribes and okrut). we certainly know that spam has found it's way into the world of feeds. there's still some pretty great uses for the well tested and very stable world of email and email clients.
peace2all.
