one of my favorite threads from project opus
warning: the post you are about to read contains a disturbing image ... you will be warned again below ... proceed at your own risk...
one of my favorite threads (do you hear an echo in here? anyway) from project opus was started by sugarblade. the whole thing began with a david hasselhof video (in which there is proof that he might be the devil ... more on that below) some singing and dancing ... oh kay said it best when she offered her view on a good "postive reinforcement of self" use for this video.
the amazing uberbelly (seriously amazing) offered some french for german and his classic wit to the conversation. while the ever eloquent stephen abbott provided a rather disturbing image in words about a certain a contest prime time reality tv show where hasselhoff was a judge and kit (the car) is saying naughty naughties to some dancer as she makes her reverse dressing dance taking it down to a g-string (it gets more disturbing as we roll on).
kay then interjects a phrase seemingly unknown to the amazing uberbelly, "wife beaters." abbott steps in with a happy days reference only to be followed by an apparently bewildered (but still amazing) uberbelly who queries, "what the h*** (censorship is alive and well on mostbloggers) is a 'wife beater'?" you'll have to read the next parts for yourself - too funny - the amazing uberbelly once again makes me laugh harder than anyone on the net.
typhus ads a youtube vid to the mix - what appears to be an asian spiderman vs. the rock - which ... don't let me give it away ... ends with a transformer.
i, amos dettonville, offer my own take on hasselhoff being possibly the anti-christ (see, this is from the devil ref above ... dettonville delivers as promised).
when out of the blue giacino offers an amazing hasselhoff quote:
"I find it a bit sad that there is no photo of me hanging on the walls in the Berlin Museum at Checkpoint Charlie"
hey, there's a link with evidence concerning hasselhoff and the taking down of the berlin wall.

and here's where it get's ugly, really ugly, nursing mothers, those with kids in the car, people below a certain height, the squimish (or is that sqemish, or squeemish ... someone i think i might have missed it ... but too lazy to use my spell checker google to find out), the lonely, the loved, those who can fog a glass ... might want to turn back from this post at this moment ... you have been warned...

i like eurekster swickis, but...
Finding Amos Search swicki
is my own swicki that i started as soon as swickis became available. i am somewhat pleased with the concept - that the searchers of a particular community (or body of blog readers or site readers) gathers the info and shapes the search. it almost becomes that groups own search feature - self influenced and self designed by reason of use (with moderation).i say that i like it ... but somehow it still falls short of what i saw being born out of eurekster's earlier versions of this, their "search parties."

was my first attempt at a blog oriented search party. it promised to be much the same, community driven. it was different - upfront about included sites and upfront about banned sites, etc.. it also kept a running number of "members" though membership appears to require only using the search (i think). a promised "comments" or "message board" type application was coming ... but never did afaik. i also began rabits moodroom theology searchparty™ in hopes of building a community around my particular interest in theology and theological discussion. i don't even think the link works now.don't get me wrong, i love the swicki concept and eurekster stated from the beginning that one of their main goals was to create more than just a community based search - but also a way for people to get in on the money making side of the search engine industry. so far, swickis come close to that through google ads. a swicki owner gets a report on current activity and an estimated worth of their swicki in the search market. someone generating a large community and using their swicki as the communities search of choice - certainly can rack up some google ad impressions and probably clicks, etc.,. so, they're aiming still towards that monetization goal.
i quess i was hoping that the "search parties" would go the way of something like mybloglog. mbl has found that viral-like, smooth, people oriented tipping point. that's something i had hoped would come with the search party - or make it's way into the swickis. something more than "search members 98" but a growing, human faced or avatar or nic oriented gathering which might serve to spawn communication, dialog, discussion, conversation, and reinforcement to online communities and niche topics and group interests.
maybe, eurekster is aiming that way. i have followed them since they were a little search interface with a unique presentation of results. they have only gotten better and better - with a creativity that leaves many old school searches in the dust. basically, when the world went google - eurekster went creative and community oriented. they saw the power of niched or hived groups and made a bee line for hitting that group hard.
anyway, if you don't have a swicki - you can always influence mine. or you can get one for yourself. i hope more great ideas and the massaging of those ideas continues to bring eurekster to the top ... they saw it first and went for it.

Two Horses
Just up the road from my home is a field,
With two horses in it.
From a distance, each looks like every other horse.
But if you stop your car, or are walking by,
You will notice something quite amazing.
Looking into the eyes of one horse will
Disclose that he is blind.
His owner has chosen not to have him put down,
But has made a good home for him.
This alone is amazing.
If you are nearby and listening,
You will hear the sound of a bell.
Looking around for the source of the sound,
You will see that it comes from the
Smaller horse in the field.
Attached to her halter is a small bell.
It lets her blind friend know where she is,
So he can follow her.
As you stand and watch these two friends,
You'll see how she is always checking on him,
And that he will listen for her bell and then
Slowly walk to where she is, trusting that she
Will not lead him astray. When she returns to the
Shelter of the barn each evening, she stops
Occasionally and looks back, making sure her
Friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell.
Like the owners of these two horses,
God does not throw us away just because
We are not perfect or because we have problems
Or challenges. He watches over us and even brings
Others into our lives to help us when we are in need.
Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by
The little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives.
Other times we are the guide horse, helping others see.
Good friends are like this.
You don't always see them,
But you know they are always there.
Please listen for my bell and I'll listen for yours.

there are other wiki hosts out there - but seedwiki has been at this for quite a long time and constantly improving. one of the things i look for online are "real improvements" over time. i prefer that to perfection out of the box. it shows that there's a caring mind behind the site or service.

i began blogging sometime in 2001 or 2002 with blogger - so i suppose it's mostly brand loyalty now :-)
that's right i happen to like blogger
seriously, when i started, it was a great way to learn html and basic coding - and i had to do all of that by hand. blogspot was a simple blue page. the editor was ... i still am not a huge fan of wysiwyg - but it's gotten better and better.
the crash
sometime, early on - blogger lost my account. my blog and all of my previous blogging simply vanished. i could not log in - i cannot even remember the name of the blog. i simply signed up again - and began anew. i do believe that blogger had some kind of crash during that time - and lost a bunch of stuff. either way, i came back and have been blogging in some fashion ever since.
starting mostbloggers
mostbloggers isp blog was a lark - a test of trying to use a new style of writing for myself. instead of the long articles, or thoughtful posts, i began putting a lot more time into what i call, "a tell and show" approach to blogging. very little tell and (as best as i could) a lot of linkage to demostrate or test out whatever i was writing about. i simply tired of reading about stuff - or someone's review - and thought a few pre-surfed links would be the way to go.
my intuition pays off
of course, my instincts were correct and i have remained among the top 80 - 90% of bloggers ever since. it's humbling, i know ;-).

in a post on social bookmarking i wrote: "... my advice would be to pick one of the services which appeals most to you and begin by just using one. in the end that should be the goal anyway - to find a service you enjoy, trust, and which works easily."
i still stand by that idea - even though i continue to play around with several folksonomy type sites and continue to try out new ones (and old ones as well).
but, i like reddit quite a bit - amos dettonville likes reddit - there i said it (a poem of sorts).
maybe i got into reddit when my thanksgiving post brought such quality readers to my blog - but then again, i was already following the reddit blog and was already a fan of the mascot.
basically, as i am surveying things online - i am asking the questions:
do i use it?
does it bring me back on its own?
do i enjoy it?
those probably are the big 3. i'll have a post about how much "new" do people really use coming next month. you'll be able to find it with the patented amos dettonville future link (alphalpha v.02)!
