WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY JR.: 1925-2008: another hero passes

first larry norman dies this week and now william f. buckley jr. passes.

i wrote last year concerning buckley:

i grew up honoring buckely from my time as a child when half or 2 thirds of what he said made little sense to my young mind. i kept with him all those years - and i haven't agreed with him on the iraq war - nor on what appears to be a "fortress america" mentality - though it is not. anyway, he is an elder statesman and a man who should be heard and pondered ... no flip remark is worthy reply to his offerings - ever. amos vs. buckley link

coulter writes about the stuff i love about buckley, especially bringing up his first book - an in your face "tell me i cannot speak at graduation Yale" book.

my heart skips a beat or two this week (not in the happy way - just in a sobering missed thump here or there) as two influences on my life and thinking have passed away so closely together.

for buckley, the man who challenged yale to get back to it's Christian Vision and buckley, who brought "libertarian" or "free market" ecomomics back to the world of thought and things, and buckley who championed the projection of strength and an engaged foriegn policy for the U.S. - for buckley, who made me laugh and think in every firing line debate i witnessed - for his passing - i put my hand over my heart and wish to somehow honor a man who changed the world with ideas - and will continue to do so long after this date of his passing.

maybe someone will find the exchange - i just remember seeing it as a boy - buckley and some bearded philosopher were discussing something - when the philosopher made the statement something like, "see my book, we cannot truly say this book exists..." and the man, buckley (even black and white tv could not hide the sparkle in his grin and eyes), said (in much bigger words than i can recall), "then please hand me your non-existent book and let me smash it against your head ... and then we'll discuss whether you think your book really exists or not...." i may not recall the exact words ... but i'll never forget such brilliance.

mr. buckley - farewell.
