adolescence is a failed concept

told you not to eat that coconut

i've just heard this line quoted, rumored, hinted at - and yet it is probably one of the most important ideas that i have heard in a long time. honestly, just the rumor of the quote (having not read it at all - in or out of context) has thrilled me to no end. it's funny how you spend a week thinking, discussing, and pondering a topic and then someone comes along and crystalizes it in one phrase.

the attribution (at present) seems to be my old neighbor Newt Gingrich - a man who i do not think will ever be president of the US (just as Giuliani will never become a US president - not because of divorce - but infidelity while in office - but that's another story).

i plan to somehow be a part of the thinkers and the movement (my durndest i will) that i pray flows out of this concept for change in the US and parts of the western world. i feel it is an important movement for change that must be pursued. so, expect to see some of my writings here and there on the subject (and probably some of my masters level writing and thinking - as opposed to the pop chat i typically enjoy - maybe - maybe i'll just keep popping off in pop-style).

btw, it's a font too (odd theme as of late?)

anyway, the quote as enough for me - i'll post a google link with it so you can beat me to the punch in reading and discovering the gist of this quote as used by the speaker. for me, it's the idea - it's been jelling for many years in my mind (a man who devoted 24 years of his life to working with young people ages 12 - 24).

i heard the other day that Newt said:

"Adolescence is a failed idea"

IMHO, no truer words have been said in a long time - and i do not care who entered them into the public discourse* ... i am simply hopeful that the discussion will begin and continue.

i hope to do my part in this conversation as well.

more to come ... look for it.

*i don't care who ... i recently read some neo-nazi say something to the effect that "Isaac Newton was arrogant" as if that bit of info (true or not) made any difference ... the genetic fallacy in operation. i care one whit whether Newton was arrogant or a jerk - the question is "was he right" and in so many ways and so many topics - he was. even more important - Newton's importance cannot be doubted ... we debunk propositions by debunking the proposition not the one who proposed it. concerning newt, he's the eternal eccentric and brilliant professor ... at times you might want to make a fist, on other you might want to rap on your desk with that fist in approval, but the man is simply a consequential thinker ... i for one love to listen, debate, and wrestle with the things this man's mind brings to the floor.
