Amazon's iPod = Kindle
When the gadgets for music were AM radios in cars and record players - then the bang in music was AM radio and record players.
When the Video Age hit and birthed MTV - the gadget was the same one you played Nintendo on - the Television.
When the Napster Revolution made Mp3 music the craze - Apple bought a 3rd party software for mp3's - and created iTunes (a software application) and then came their iPod (a gadget) to drive the usage of both the software and the sale of mp3's. Next of course (not counting improvements both to iTunes and the iPod) came the iPhone - the trifecta was complete and is still the sleeper "Big Move"* in computing today.
Amazon has taken the time to solve the eBook problem - with Kindle - their amazing new book reader.
In this post, i am not going to do a puff piece on Kindle - except to say, "brilliant!" it grabs the trifecta that Apple reached in one fell swoop. It's on your gadgets - your computer, it's in the airwaves aka wireless, and it's a gadget you can hold in your hand, download and read a book and it works without ruining the enjoyment and process of reading.
Basically, it puts the book store where you are ... at home on your computer, your sofa, or out about in your car, on the train, in the plane.
The sale digital media is driven - as the sale of media has always been driven - by the gadgets (and now the software) that we use in our daily lives.
... not to mention the tons of books they have ready to go...

*"Big Move" - when you can get your product on someone's computer or into someone's "gadget" - there's great power in that. iTunes and the iPod broke the IE hold that microsoft held over the computing world. While Microsoft sat frozen - unable to really advance its IE stranglehold due to litigation - Apple came in the back door via the floodgates opened by the Napster revolution. This marketing trojan horse, so to speak, is there selling and gaining a favored spot in your computer.
