WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY JR.: 1925-2008: another hero passes

first larry norman dies this week and now william f. buckley jr. passes.

i wrote last year concerning buckley:

i grew up honoring buckely from my time as a child when half or 2 thirds of what he said made little sense to my young mind. i kept with him all those years - and i haven't agreed with him on the iraq war - nor on what appears to be a "fortress america" mentality - though it is not. anyway, he is an elder statesman and a man who should be heard and pondered ... no flip remark is worthy reply to his offerings - ever. amos vs. buckley link

coulter writes about the stuff i love about buckley, especially bringing up his first book - an in your face "tell me i cannot speak at graduation Yale" book.

my heart skips a beat or two this week (not in the happy way - just in a sobering missed thump here or there) as two influences on my life and thinking have passed away so closely together.

for buckley, the man who challenged yale to get back to it's Christian Vision and buckley, who brought "libertarian" or "free market" ecomomics back to the world of thought and things, and buckley who championed the projection of strength and an engaged foriegn policy for the U.S. - for buckley, who made me laugh and think in every firing line debate i witnessed - for his passing - i put my hand over my heart and wish to somehow honor a man who changed the world with ideas - and will continue to do so long after this date of his passing.

maybe someone will find the exchange - i just remember seeing it as a boy - buckley and some bearded philosopher were discussing something - when the philosopher made the statement something like, "see my book, we cannot truly say this book exists..." and the man, buckley (even black and white tv could not hide the sparkle in his grin and eyes), said (in much bigger words than i can recall), "then please hand me your non-existent book and let me smash it against your head ... and then we'll discuss whether you think your book really exists or not...." i may not recall the exact words ... but i'll never forget such brilliance.

mr. buckley - farewell.

more on Larry Norman

the righteous rocker himself

it's early the next day after learning of Larry Norman's death this past sunday morning at 2:45.

i work nights, so the news of his passing was a part of my "hard days ... 'night!" my 4 year old daughter told me, "daddy, I prayed for Larry Norman and his family and friends," just as i was leaving for work.

funny thoughts run through my mind - and i thought two of them blog worthy.

1) what have i been doing? 30 years since i first listened over and over again to a cheap cassette recording of Norman's music - taken off the radio - over and over and over again. i've done a lot in those years ... but still, at times like this ... i wonder "what am i doing now?"

life's too short. part of the adult me has lost the young me - who bravely faced life with open eyes and carried about the motto: "I want it all with open eyes" as my own declaration of how i looked at my own life and my own future passing. just a way of saying, "i don't want to miss one of life's experiences, whatever they might be ... seemingly good or seemingly bad ... i want to see it all."

2) i cannot help but feel that concerning Larry ... maybe i could have cared more. i have cared about him and i have been faithful to pray for my older brother ... but, times like this make me want to "care more."

watchman nee is credited with saying something like, "when my hands were whipped my feet felt pain." a way of saying that within the body of Christ ... when one of us hurts ... we all feel it - we all share in it.

obviously, we're not able to take in the whole world of human suffering, nor to carry the weight on our backs - even the full suffering of just one another ... but we do share in it.

my grandparents were simple people - not nearly as learned nor sophisticated as i am (no dig on them - i've simply been blessed with a great deal of goodness). when their daughter contracted polio - they prayed together saying, "maybe we just weren't thankful enough for all of our children." bad theology for certian ... their lack of thankfulness in no way caused their kid to have polio.

but, that's not the point - i could hold the right theology and miss the tender heartedness and childlike passion that my depression era grandparents walked in as a matter of course. i want to be as simple and tender hearted as they were about those i love and my faith in Whom i love.

Larry struggled for a long time with his health ... i cared ... i felt ... i even did. but, in that simple part of my being ... i would always like to have cared more deeply, felt more consistently, and done more ... to have done more.

so, the past cannot be made up - i've yet to find a way to go back in time - nor any strong desire to do so.

however, as i look fwd in my days ... the passing of Larry Norman - this great influence in my life ... has brought about a desire in me to get on with living and to get deeper in the quality of my living.

funny, that's exactly what my discovery of Larry Norman and his music those long years ago - did to my life in the first place.

plenty of better articles and news on Larry - i'll offer some links:

Larry Norman has passed

MESSAGE FROM SOLID ROCK - PLEASE READ

Hello everybody. Our friend and my wonderful brother Larry passed away at
2:45 Sunday morning. Kristin and I were with him, holding his hands and
sitting in bed with him when his heart finally slowed to a stop. We
spent this past week laughing, singing, and praying with him, and all
the while he had us taking notes on new song ideas and instructions on
how to continue his ministry and art.Several of you friends here got to
come and visit with him in the last couple of weeks and were a great
source of help and friendship to Larry.Ray Sievers, Derek Robertson,
Mike Makinster, Matt Simmons, and a fewmore. Thank you guys. Larry
appreciated your visits very much. And he greatly appreciated the
thoughts, wishes, support and prayers that came from all of you Army
members on a daily basis. Thank you for being part of his small circle
of friends over the years. Yesterday afternoon he knew he was going to
go home to God very soon and he dictated the following message to you
while his friend Allen Fleming typed these words into Larry's computer:___

_____________________________

I feel like a prize in a box of cracker jacks with God's hand reaching
down to pick me up. I have been under medical care for months. My wounds
are getting bigger. I have trouble breathing. I am ready to fly home.My
brother Charles is right, I wont be here much longer. I cant do anything
about it. My heart is too weak. I want to say goodbye to everyone. In
the past you have generously supported me with prayer and finance and we
will probably still need financial help. My plan is to be buried in a
simple pine box with some flowers inside. But still it will be costly
because of funeral arrangement, transportation to the gravesite,
entombment, coordination, legal papers etc. However money is not really
what I need, I want to say I love you.I'd like to push back the darkness
with my bravest effort. There will be a funeral posted here on the
website, in case some of you want to attend. We are not sure of the date
when I will die. Goodbye, farewell,we will meet again.Goodbye, farewell,
we'll meet again Somewhere beyond the sky.I pray that you will stay with
God Goodbye, my friends, goodbye.Larry
________________________________________

Thank you to all of you who were so nice to my brother over the
years.Kristin and I will post funeral information in the next day or
two. Right now we're not able to function very well, but the whole
family is here... our mother Margaret, our sisters Nancy and Kristy,
Mike Norman and his new wife Tiffany, and Silver. We miss him beyond
words. Thank you for everything.
Peace to you all in Christ, Charles Norman

Indie Music Genre's on Project Opus

name yer poison:

i am about to play a game ... in a few upcoming posts - and follow the genre list from my favorite indie music site project opus.

in the past, i have been really huge into search engines and interfaces on this blog - but for now i am going to look try to use some different searches and try to discover some of the hot sites (known or little known or unknown) in each of these music genres listed above.

speaking of the word, "genre," my bud chris carder is a top 5 finalist for the momentum awards.

Remember...Voting will END on MARCH 1, 2008!

the person who wrote the copy for that press release used the word, "genera" for genre. it's a proper use of the word ... just interesting spelling choice. is it some google trick? or just have i been wrong all along? or is it just one person's quirky word choice? who knows. googling it now. i don't get it?

anyway. that's the head's up -

my first upcoming post should try to search out five genres (genre genera let's call the whole thing off):

  1. Acid Jazz (16)
  2. Acoustic (425)
  3. Alternative (729)
  4. Ambient (194)
  5. Big Band (8)

it will either be fun ... or ... awww, it's gotta be fun.

what ever happened to WebTv? MSN! a hulu note

i've been trying out the hulu.com beta (? i think it's private beta). and one of my first thoughts was, this is nice - not aimed at the desktop though, but more at something i'd like to pipe to my television set. i don't sit at my desk to watch television - but i want to see the shows they offer on hulu (many of them anyway - firefly being one. i'll post more on hulu in the future - and shows available ... though i wish they had the new Doctor Who - season 3 with Freema is excellent).

this led me to think, "What ever happened to WebTv?" i used to see it's tracks all around ... but, not so much anymore - not at all actually.

so we turn to google.

from there to wikipedia.

and voila! (or is it voici? i think it's "voici!")

MSN happened to WebTv - a long time ago.

apparently, going down hill ever since ... but who knows?!

when will be able to pipe or jack our computers in one room to the televisions in other rooms? maybe this has already happened and i missed it?

surely, with flash hard drives coming - they are - we'll see something of the computer offerings available on your (HD Tv's) coming out 2008 - 2009.

would be cool.

carder's Trust review and comment, mybloglog and blogcatalog,

the christian manifesto reviewed chris carder's album "Trust" - i wasn't too thrilled with the review - it doesn't seem to be the same CD that i've been listening to. but, taste is taste - the comments seem interesting - glowing even. never read the christian manifesto (well, this one i have and do read) but the blog - not so much. i'll have to check it out sometime.

i read that mybloglog.com is coming up with some face changes or some changes - being intergrated with yahoo. details - less than fully known at the moment.

http://www.mybloglog.com/buzz/members/amos/

the same with blogcatalog.com - they're supposedly leveraging social networks in a major way.

http://www.blogcatalog.com/user/amos

it seems both services (often mistakenly thought of as clones - but i think they're not - just similar in many respects and different in many respects as well) are taking a leap forward. i have wondered if mybloglog.com would wither on the yahoo vine? but, time will tell - so far - i think they're doing just fine.

wonder who else is in this game besides these two sites?

recently, i've complained about fwds - claimed that i don't get them anymore ... acted like i don't like them ... and then some junk like this comes along ... and makes me a liar:

Subject: FW: Hollywood Squares

If you are old enough to remember the Original Hollywood Squares
and its comics, this may bring a tear to your eyes.

These questions and answers are from the days when "Hollywood
Squares" game show responses were spontaneous, not scripted, as they
are now. Peter Marshall was the host asking the questions, of course.
