good reads: He said "brain dead liberal" mamet!

this image is related how? it's nothing more than another interesting link

all good reads on the same topic (and thus just links for you) - the village voice article (a little old at this date - but still very timely):

adolescence is a failed concept

told you not to eat that coconut

i've just heard this line quoted, rumored, hinted at - and yet it is probably one of the most important ideas that i have heard in a long time. honestly, just the rumor of the quote (having not read it at all - in or out of context) has thrilled me to no end. it's funny how you spend a week thinking, discussing, and pondering a topic and then someone comes along and crystalizes it in one phrase.

the attribution (at present) seems to be my old neighbor Newt Gingrich - a man who i do not think will ever be president of the US (just as Giuliani will never become a US president - not because of divorce - but infidelity while in office - but that's another story).

i plan to somehow be a part of the thinkers and the movement (my durndest i will) that i pray flows out of this concept for change in the US and parts of the western world. i feel it is an important movement for change that must be pursued. so, expect to see some of my writings here and there on the subject (and probably some of my masters level writing and thinking - as opposed to the pop chat i typically enjoy - maybe - maybe i'll just keep popping off in pop-style).

btw, it's a font too (odd theme as of late?)

anyway, the quote as enough for me - i'll post a google link with it so you can beat me to the punch in reading and discovering the gist of this quote as used by the speaker. for me, it's the idea - it's been jelling for many years in my mind (a man who devoted 24 years of his life to working with young people ages 12 - 24).

i heard the other day that Newt said:

"Adolescence is a failed idea"

IMHO, no truer words have been said in a long time - and i do not care who entered them into the public discourse* ... i am simply hopeful that the discussion will begin and continue.

i hope to do my part in this conversation as well.

more to come ... look for it.

*i don't care who ... i recently read some neo-nazi say something to the effect that "Isaac Newton was arrogant" as if that bit of info (true or not) made any difference ... the genetic fallacy in operation. i care one whit whether Newton was arrogant or a jerk - the question is "was he right" and in so many ways and so many topics - he was. even more important - Newton's importance cannot be doubted ... we debunk propositions by debunking the proposition not the one who proposed it. concerning newt, he's the eternal eccentric and brilliant professor ... at times you might want to make a fist, on other you might want to rap on your desk with that fist in approval, but the man is simply a consequential thinker ... i for one love to listen, debate, and wrestle with the things this man's mind brings to the floor.

I've got a job for The Rifleman - photo curiosity

first, i just wanted to post a picture of The Rifleman - chuck conners as lucas mccain in the old west and in my memory in old black and white television episodes which i loved as a child ... i am also fond of run on sentences ... but first i found that The Rifleman is a font (who knew?):

then i discovered this very odd image - from this page about a giant squid - with some more funny / odd images (looks a bit like hilary ... strange that?)....

finally, i found (not what i was looking for - a full body standing image) but one that was satisfactory... voila or voici "The Rifleman" ...

thanks pa!

son, let's go home.

the end.

if you're in email or some sites which carry my feed ... you'll need to come to mostbloggers to see the images.

the view from my kentucky home - flooding

not my backyard

looking out into my backyard ... the ground is staturated, the rain is falling, we live in the ohio river valley ... and although my home will not be flooded (being on high ground) i have to predict that we're going to see flooding again in the old river city, louisville, ky USA.

not the happiest post - but i thought i'd begin doing some "the view from my kentucky home" posts from time to time ... ya know, talk about the weather.

even though i am among the high and dry - i think it a wise time to pause and say a prayer for those who will experience flooding around our world today.

if you're like myself, the praying sort, pause and pray.

thanks.

live seafood delivered fresh to your door - a google moprh search

make mine "alive"

not a very inspiring post - though in some ways it was inspired by the thought of what can a person do online? could you actually order live seafood and have it delivered fresh to your door?

google says yes, yes you can. even if you live in plainview

but, what about different words added in place of "sea"?

like could you get live cat food delivered to your door - google says no.

no live rat food either - then how about just plain old "live rats" for the whole family?

live rats are a yes - so what about some exotic animal - a live cobra or a live lion or live aliens?

apparently, live chickens are a go as well. how about live music or a live band and some live dancers?

finally, just some generic living things???? well, of course!

seems these here internets are more powerful and dynamic than most people would have thought. amazing.

Are You Tougher Than a 5 Year Old?

fighting 5 year olds - creepy eh?

having not seen other people's scores - i don't know if i should be proud or ashamed of my results in this quiz on "how many five year olds could you take in a fight?"

the thing said i could take 27 - i think on one level it's plain wrong - if the kids were dead set on killing me - i am certain i could fight them all day - send 100 - send 1000. at some point there would have to be a learning curve ???

on another level - my kid is 5 - and they're tougher than you think - 27 might actually be impossible - a good five 5 year olds could probably school me.

happily, i have no need to discover the veracity of this quiz - and even better - i am certain there has to be laws (some kinda law) that keeps 5 year olds and fifth graders too from being the subject of the next "dawn of the dead" or whatever zombie movie might be coming down the pike.

oh yeah, i just wrote "coming down the pike" - quaint ain't i?

Best Quote of the 2008 Political Season - so far

the dettonville's in color

so far, the best quote of the 2008 political season has come from my ever lovely and always wondrous wife. upon hearing the latest primary news of obama and clinton going on in the primaries and mccain's clinch of becoming the nominated - she said,

"One thing you can say for certain, '2008 is definately going to be longer than 2007!'"

"It certainly will be," i said, looking over to see her with a huge smile on her face.

"of course it is ... it's leap year!"

a tautology if ever i heard one and so far it's my favorite quote ... it will probably be usurped by another down the line ... but whatever words replace its rank on my list of quotes - i doubt any of the other ones will be as certain as this one.

the Clash 1979 - live concerts online at wolfgang's vault

the clash - yep that's the clash

i signed up for wolfgang's vault - and have enjoyed getting a non-intrusive email newsletter from them - highlighting weekly concerts from the past. these are those king biscut flour hour shows (if you remember them) and there's always some great shows.

i ripped this snippet (about a clash concert you can stream for free online) from the newsletter.

enjoy:

Beginning this week, we will be highlighting one of our favorites from the vault. We have over 1,000 concerts available and want to be sure you don’t forget about these gems.

The Clash represented the working class revolution in a more definitive way than the Sex Pistols. In 1979, they released the seminal London Calling, but they didn’t officially break onto the American scene until 1982. By that time, however, they were considered “the only band that mattered.” Revisit this show today from ‘79 at Cleveland’s Agora Ballroom.

jack cafferty does obama commercial on cnn

and they call it news!

mike gallagher pointed out on his radio program something that i found absolutely amazing - a tape of CNN'er jack cafferty - from his "Cafferty Files" where Hilary Clinton is getting slammed and Barak Obama is getting what appears to be "free commercial time" from the voices of mainstream media.

thanks to youtube - you can watch jack cafferty doing his pretend hit on Obama while literally skewering Clinton right here on mostbloggers:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=bmmmaZkaAGk

and of course, the youtuber added a brilliant ending to this video (you need to watch it - it's choice).

Read the following text from cafferty and see if you don't agree that this seems like a "news" man doing a full blown ad for Obama - against Clinton. he even titles the piece as if he's going after Obama - or that he's calling into question Clinton's apparent lack of hits on Obama - calling it - Obama under scrutiny? :

"... Hillary Clinton has jumped all over Barack Obama – challenging his credibility and accusing him of deception. It’s interesting when you consider that Obama hasn’t brought up any of the past Clinton scandals during the campaign… you know, all of the stuff that’s part of Clinton’s experience like: Whitewater, Travelgate, Monica Lewinsky and impeachment, renting out the Lincoln bedroom, the loss of the Rose Law Firm billing records for nearly 2 years until they were miraculously found in the White House living quarters, removing files from Vince Foster’s office following his suicide and before investigators could get there...." Source
read it for yourself.

p.s. conservative here ... i have no dog in this hunt - being of the other party - but man - what an amazing example of what republicans have been talking about concerning media bias for years - only this time - it's being used against a clinton - simply amazing stuff. only in america eh?

chuck norris on oprah

... and by that, i don't mean to suggest that chuck norris (el carlos himself) is going to be on oprah's show - instead he's giving her a sound thrashing in an article entitled: Oprah's New Easter (let me quote):

"Again, the question is: Will we turn from what's easy, what's new, what's popular -- even what's "Oprah" -- and take a step back and rediscover the answers that have been there all along? As C.S. Lewis also said: 'We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.'"

Larry Norman group on facebook - memories

more on Larry Norman - this one from the facebook group : Larry Norman

there are so many things online that i have read recently - things about Norman that i probably will blog about on mostbloggers (find many of them on facebook group larry norman for yourself). i'll try to keep the majority of such posts down to links and blurbs (if i can). for now, i offer this single story about someone who was influenced by Larry:
--------------------------------
Subject: Larry Norman- Coffee Shop Evangelist

Larry Norman, Coffee Shop Evangelist

How a chance meeting with a selfless Christian star changed my life.
Susan Perlman | posted 2/28/2008 09:11AM

Larry Norman was more than the "father of Christian rock" to me. He was a guy with a guitar slung on his back, who had a big heart for the lost — including a young Jewish girl who didn't even know she needed to find her Messiah.

My first encounter with Larry was in the early '70s, with the Jesus Movement in its glory. I was walking down 47th Street and Broadway, in midtown Manhattan, on my lunch hour, when I noticed him. He was conspicuous because of his extremely blond, long hair. He was also wearing a sticker on his shirt; one that I had seen affixed to people's clothing for days. I was curious to read the message on the sticker. Not only that, but he looked fine, and I was the adventurous type. But my interest was mixed with caution — I was also a street-smart New Yorker — so I didn't want to ask him about it directly. If he was some sort of fanatic, I did not want to get entangled in a discussion that was not of my choosing.

I decided the best solution would be to find a pretense for getting close enough to read the sticker myself. All this happened within seconds, so I stopped him with the first thing that came to mind: "Excuse me, I was wondering, would you mind telling me … is your hair really that color, or do you dye it?"

Larry smiled and assured me that his hair was not dyed. Meanwhile, I was able to read the words printed on the sticker: "Smile. God loves you."

Such a statement would not have caught my interest, except that I had recently read a cover article in Time magazine about the California "Jesus People." Larry didn't look like a New Yorker; but he did seem to fit the quintessential description of a "Jesus Person."

"Are you one of the 'Jesus People'?" I asked.

"I suppose so," he responded. "Would you like to get a cup of coffee?"

He was intriguing, so I entered a nearby coffee shop with him. I ordered some coffee, and Larry asked for a glass of milk. And then he did what he has done best throughout his career. He shared the message of new life in Jesus and told me what believing in Jesus meant to him.

This was the first time I had ever heard what is called "the gospel." Well, I let Larry know I was Jewish and that Jews don't believe in Jesus. I figured there might be an awkward moment, maybe even a mumbled apology, and then we would talk about something else. Maybe he'd invite me out on a date.

But Larry continued to talk as if Jesus were still relevant to the discussion. Instead of a date, he invited me to a church in New Jersey where he was giving a concert. I didn't know that he was a well-known Christian artist, songwriter, and producer extraordinaire. I guess I didn't know because Larry was not full of himself. He was full of a heart to reach people whom God wanted to reach — and that included me.

I accompanied Larry to the concert. His music and its message rocked my heart. He didn't have any of the corny sentimentality I'd associated with Christians. Actually, he was kind of rough around the edges, in a good way. Larry didn't offer pat answers to the hard questions of life; he was real and that resonated with this Jewish girl's desire to know if the rabbis got it wrong and if Jesus really is our Messiah.

Larry was elated when I later came to believe in Jesus. He rejoiced in seeing me serve the Lord these past 37 years through a ministry I helped found, Jews for Jesus. You could say that anyone I've been able to influence for Christ can thank those who influenced me — and that certainly includes Larry Norman.

Thank you, Larry, for bringing your sweet song of salvation to so many.
