Songs About Broken Love - from two of my favorites...

All night at work, i had this Larry Norman song (the bridge of the song actually), running through my head. i kept walking around singing it and when i'd pause it would play in my mind on the "brain muzak" that i came equipped with. i'll not ramble about that too much ... but, i used to think everyone went around with music in their head all the time ... i didn't know that not everybody does ... so anyway (as they say)...

i thought i'd share the lyrics of this song (just this bridge part) as i find them to be a very well written and crafted bit of verse and song.

from Larry Norman's "Soul Survivor"

i'm trying so hard to forget my pain
and leave my past behind
but when your life is suddenly filled with rain
you keep remembering how the sun used to shine
and i can't stand the loneliness the constant emptiness
why has unhappiness come into my life
i spend my mornings waking and thinking
and cry my evenings late into the night
you can hear most of it here: http://songza.com/z/5dt998

Pity i cannot find the full song online to share. It comes from Larry Norman's classic album "So Long Ago the Garden" which is one of the best broken relationship collection of songs that also explores the human condition with such a soft hand that it's deeper insights tend to sneak up on you over time while listening and / or pondering these great songs.

Here are a couple more snippets from "Garden" by Larry Norman:

Lonely By Myself - http://songza.com/z/7nteqr

Baroquen Spirits - http://songza.com/z/ykqzim

Bruce Cockburn's "Human's" is another fantastic relationship album - exploring those broken places ... many songs being all too "human" reflecting in one way or another his divorce.

a couple of snippet song links from "Humans"

You Get Bigger as You Go : http://songza.com/z/uer5ml

Fascist Architecture : http://songza.com/z/r3fhsx

i wish i could find my favorite song from that album to share - even a bit - "Tokoyo" - if you find it -- well, i hope you like it as much as i do. "What About the Bond" is another great tune ... i love every track on "Humans" so i am biased.

Fascist Architecture (above) is a brilliant song - comparing those gaudy Fascist Mussolini buildings in Italy to one's own personal constructions ... anyway, i'll not spoil the depth of the song by explaining too much ... it's better to listen and "get it" over time ... as good music like this keeps on giving the deeper u go.

one more song:

it's a pity one cannot easily find songs to post - with "sale" links so that the artists could get benefit from blog and web exposure.

another little thing that would be cool would be if search results showed songs in them the way youtube videos are shown on google - just a little "expand this" link where songs are in a blog post.

oh well.

the two albums and songs listed above are two of the most searching albums concerning relationships, fallen, broken, struggling, living, etc., that have ever been made, IMHO. Well worth searching for ...

Funny thing is ... I'm fine, my relationships are all running as smoothly as humanly possible ... maybe it's just this moody rainy day and night weather ... maybe i just like songs about human things ... like life, love and yes, even broken love songs.

Online Polls - doorways to subscriber marketing

do you vote in online polls like this?

polls grab my attention
i just grabbed the first poll that i happened to run across this morning ... it could have been one of 10,000's (maybe more or less than thousands ... i don't really know). This one is from NewsMax - and you can click the image and visit their site (though i did not link to the poll nor use someone's promo code in this example) ... anyway, click the pic above and you can find the poll (i'm looking for it - i am sure it's there - at the top of this page) and you can subscribe to their email updates.

maybe a mostbloggers poll?
i have no real problem with people using polls to boost subscribers ... i'll do one later this week (in play) to boost my ownline subscribers either via rss or you can get my darn insightful and always popular blog :) in your email (along with literally 10's of other people)!

a good example done right
And i am glad i picked NewsMax - because they do it right ... by participating in their poll - they make it very clear that your email address and name are required and that you are subscribing to "news alerts" in your email from them. They also do it right by making it clear and in plain print that you can "unsubscribe at anytime."

do you take polls too?
The reason i bring this up in a post is this odd thing i find myself doing from time to time online - and i wondered if you did it too?

i see an image like the one above ... feel compelled to vote ... click the link ... check off my responses ... and then when i see the "*required fields must be filled in" asterisk words ... i scan the fine print ... and never submit my responses ... ever.

they never get me - ever
i wonder what the success rate of these polls is in getting subscribers ... probably huge. but, they do not work on people like myself.

a suggestion
what might work ... i almost think it would ... would be to require my email address with an offer something like, "by participating in this poll you will be sent one (and only one) free newsletter (or news digest, or whatever) in your email.

that email would be something of substance ... not too huge but interesting and reflective of the site.

it would also make an appeal something like,

"We hope you enjoy this free copy of "the blah blah blah" and we'd love to send you regular copies of "the blah blah blah" ... Your subscription is already set up for you ... All you'll need to do is click this link "subscribe to the blah blah blah" and that's all. You can unsubscribe at any time you wish. Thank you."

i might actually go for that ... plus once i filled out the survey ... a simple redirect could take me to a nice splash page or the site itself ... with just one more little touch to try and win me over.

i am certain the method being used my all these groups is better than my suggestion ... but, then again ... if you're like i am ... these types of appeals work only to a point - and fail at the point of conversion.

doorways ... think doorways
In my thinking, doorway one was an invitation to a poll. If that wins me over to doing the poll ... then why would a marketer want to lose me by not offering me at least the option of getting only one (1 count it) email (or a free trial for 1 week of news alerts - guaranteed to end after one week or month or whatever). Let doorway 2 (two count 'em) be an actual invitation.

Just the way i see things.

feed the bunny rabit :0)
oh, and while you're here ... if you don't want to subscribe to my mega successful blog (grin) then at least stop by and feed the bunny ... he likes carrots and jumping.

p.s. watched the green berets last night (with john wayne) and i teared up in the most manly way during the whole "you're what this thing's about!" ending. "Peterson!" two john wayne movies in just a week or so "rio lobo" and "green berets" and i gotta see me some more of that classic john wayne movie stuff ... good movies no doubt about it!

Kindle - Amazon's iPod - brilliant

Amazon's iPod = Kindle

When the gadgets for music were AM radios in cars and record players - then the bang in music was AM radio and record players.

When the Video Age hit and birthed MTV - the gadget was the same one you played Nintendo on - the Television.

When the Napster Revolution made Mp3 music the craze - Apple bought a 3rd party software for mp3's - and created iTunes (a software application) and then came their iPod (a gadget) to drive the usage of both the software and the sale of mp3's. Next of course (not counting improvements both to iTunes and the iPod) came the iPhone - the trifecta was complete and is still the sleeper "Big Move"* in computing today.

Amazon has taken the time to solve the eBook problem - with Kindle - their amazing new book reader.

In this post, i am not going to do a puff piece on Kindle - except to say, "brilliant!" it grabs the trifecta that Apple reached in one fell swoop. It's on your gadgets - your computer, it's in the airwaves aka wireless, and it's a gadget you can hold in your hand, download and read a book and it works without ruining the enjoyment and process of reading.

Basically, it puts the book store where you are ... at home on your computer, your sofa, or out about in your car, on the train, in the plane.

The sale digital media is driven - as the sale of media has always been driven - by the gadgets (and now the software) that we use in our daily lives.

... not to mention the tons of books they have ready to go...

click the image at the top of this post or check it for yourself with this link: Kindle.

kudos to Amazon on this one!

*"Big Move" - when you can get your product on someone's computer or into someone's "gadget" - there's great power in that. iTunes and the iPod broke the IE hold that microsoft held over the computing world. While Microsoft sat frozen - unable to really advance its IE stranglehold due to litigation - Apple came in the back door via the floodgates opened by the Napster revolution. This marketing trojan horse, so to speak, is there selling and gaining a favored spot in your computer.
